An empowered youth is an embodiment of endless possibilities. We discover their talent early enough, nurture these talents, teach life skills, inspire self-belief, and create economic opportunities thereby empowering them to break the cycle of poverty and unlock their full potentials. Young people across the length and breadth of Nigeria possess tremendous potential in various fields, but they are faced with disproportionate risks and socio-economic barriers that can create challenging transitions into adulthood. In Nigeria, young people—particularly girls and young boys —are vulnerable to poverty and exploitation and face limited job prospects. ACTDF’s youth programs combine social empowerment, economic empowerment, mentorship and education to enable young people to reach their full potential. ACTDF’s youth programs build self confidence, leadership skills, critical thinking, decision-making skills, and social skills. We typically use a talent-celebrity mentoring model so youth can be inspired, learn and be engaged on topics with international and national mentorship-based facilitators.
Today, more people than ever are in need of humanitarian assistance due to conflict and disaster. For well over a decade the ACTDF has supported communities in crisis. Whether human-made, a natural disaster, or a disease outbreak, ACTDF rapidly meets basic needs, inspires resilience, and fosters self-sufficiency for those affected by crisis. As countries worldwide combat the spread of COVID-19, ACTDF is responding comprehensively to COVID-19 with public health interventions, humanitarian assistance to meet urgent needs, and socioeconomic rehabilitation and development programs, enabling those most affected around the globe to navigate the pandemic and rebuild their lives.
The indirect impact of Covid-19 in the Nigeria will be even greater than the direct impact. The direct impact, as tragic as it is, affects those affected and their families. The indirect impact has economic and social consequences for vastly more people — with jobs lost, families hungry, domestic violence up, more children leaving school, and costs more over generations.
Every child deserves access to qualitative education but the effects of poverty on children can be profound and long-lasting, and the poorest and most vulnerable children are the least likely to access qualitative education. Ensuring quality education is made available to children in remote, impoverished communities is at the heart of ACTDF’s work, enabling these children to grow into active, engaged, and resilient adults capable of navigating shocks and overcoming adversity. Our efforts on education help ensure that individuals have the tools they need to achieve the promise in their own lives. Over 200 hundred children are enrolled in schools from kindergarten to tertiary level annually and provided with full scholarships; uniforms, learning materials and every other resources giving them the opportunity to learn, grow and thrive
Social enterprises can close market gaps that limit opportunities for people living in extreme poverty. People living in very remote areas face market gaps that limit their ability to buy the essentials they need to run a business or sell the products they make. ACTDF’s social enterprises address these critical market gaps and enable people living in poverty to grow their businesses, boost their income, and become more self-reliant.
We provide hardworking people living in poverty with the proven tools and support they need to create the best lives for themselves. We have served over 10 thousand people all over Nigeria with a particular focus on women and girls. We have disbursed micro-loans to over 7 thousand people. We up-skill youths, farmers, traders, small to medium scale local entrepreneurs. We have assisted over two thousand families lift themselves out of ultra-poverty.
